Start Your Own Scholarship

Fund a CKSF Scholarship or create your own traditional scholarship

The secret of scholarships: Awarding a scholarship is more rewarding than receiving a scholarship. You are making a difference in the lives of others, your community and society. The process creates an instant bond and the world will look at you in a whole new light.

I would like to start a traditional type scholarship - not one through CKSF.

Starting your own traditional scholarship does not have to be difficult. Consider yourself a hero for just considering it - it is a good a rare thing you are considering.

  1. Choose the population you want to help, some example are:
  1. High school seniors
  2. Students who have done some type of community service
  3. College students that are biology majors
  1. Decide what you want students to do to apply - write an essay, submit grades, etc.
  2. Decide how you want to administer the scholarship
  1. Contact a school and put the money in a restricted school account
  2. Create a special account at your bank designated as the scholarship fund
  3. Simply write a check out of your account when the time comes (be careful to follow all laws)
  1. Announce that your scholarship is available
  1. Contact the school's guidance office or financial aid office
  2. Write a press release (optional)
  3. Create a simple flyer to hand out
  1. Provide written instructions on what students have to do to win (This is critical)
  1. What is the deadline to submit the application?
  2. Who EXACTLY is eligible?
  3. How much is the award?
  4. What EXACTLY does the student have to do?
  5. Who does the student send the application to when ready?
  6. Be prepared for phone calls and letters asking the same questions over and over and over and over no matter how detailed your instructions.
  1. Decide when you will provide the money to the winner and how the money may be used (CKSF sends the check payable to the college for deposit in the student's account.)
  2. Please Note: There are now laws governing a scholarship funder from solely choosing the scholarship winner!!
