CKSF FAQ

How much time does it take to answer a quiz?
Normally, quizzes are made up of 15 to 30 questions - depending on the scholarship contest. Some people have taken as little as 2 ½ minutes and others as much as 16 minutes to answer the entire quiz. However, time is not a decisive factor - please refer to the Timing and answering on the tips and facts section below for a deeper explanation.

How do I know if there is a scholarship for me? Or When I click on my state I get the message that there are "no scholarships available at this time". How do I know when one is going to be available?
You can click on your state, and it will list all the scholarships available at that time for the schools on that state. Be aware however, that some of these scholarships are limited to a particular school. From time to time - when we find a sponsor willing to do so - the scholarship can be available for broader zones, like cities, counties or even the entire state. Nevertheless the best way to be informed of upcoming scholarships is to register with CKSF. To do this, simply click on the "Register" link on the left menu and follow the instructions.

What is the dollar amount of the scholarships awarded?
It varies depending on the contest and the generosity of the sponsor. To date, our major scholarship awards have ranged from $100 to our highest single award of $10,000.

What happens if I lose connection in the middle of a quiz? The timing process will continue only for the question you left off. The next time you connect, the system will remember where you left, and present you the following question, and the timer will start again.

How do I get to the statistics page to find my standings?
To see Common Knowledge Scholarship results go to www.cksf.org and on the right side of the page you will see "Scholarships in Progress." Under this are all the contests currently running with a link to each. Just click on the link to your contest.

Tips & Facts

    Computer and Internet connection
There is no especial Internet connection requirement. However, a Cable Broadband, DSL or LAN connection is recommended, although the time gained over a dial up connection could be less than 2 seconds (2 points over 500 per question). The same is true for the computer hardware you might be using.

    Timing and answering
The timing for each question works in a cycle manner. The timer starts as soon as your browser loads the page from our server, and it stops when you click on submit, and then it repeats the process for the next question, the timer restarts as soon as your browser loads the next page and stops when you click on submit. Alleviate the pressure. Take your time to answer and research a question if necessary (we want you to learn on the process). Since one question is worth 500 points, and 1 point is deducted for each second it takes to answer it, then you could take up to 500 seconds (8 minutes, 20 seconds) to answer a particular question before losing all the points for that question. It is better to get it right and score a little bit less than 500, than getting a zero (0) for a wrong answer! Even if you take 4 minutes and 10 seconds to answer a question and you get it right, you will still be awarded 250 points - better than no points at all.
